How Does PRP Work to Help Restore Hair?

How Does PRP Work to Help Restore Hair?

Hair restoration treatments have made major advancements in recent years. However, some treatments may not look as natural as others. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a promising option for hair loss, rejuvenating your own hair follicles to restore a more natural look.

At Montclair Rejuvenation Center, under the medical direction of Dr. Kelly Distefano, our highly skilled aesthetics team proudly offers PRP hair restoration treatments, using the healing powers of your platelets to improve the look and health of your hair.

The ABCs of PRP

PRP has become popular recently because it is a more natural approach to healing and rejuvenation. PRP contains plasma (the liquid portion of your blood) and a high concentration of platelets.

Platelets are the tiny blood cells that band together to form blood clots, stopping cuts from bleeding. The blood clotting also triggers the platelets to release growth factors and specialized proteins that help heal the damage.

PRP takes your body's healing powers and supercharges it, packing your plasma with more platelets and then administering them directly into the area that needs them. Doctors use PRP to help heal sports injuries, reduce pain, and rejuvenate the skin.

PRP also helps with hair loss.

PRP for hair restoration

Hair loss is a common problem with many causes. However, most hair loss is due to a condition called androgenic alopecia, or male and female patterned baldness. The hair loss happens because the hair follicles stop growing hair. PRP reactivates the hair follicles.

For hair restoration, we inject the PRP into the areas of the scalp where you have hair thinning. Though researchers are still learning about PRP and how it works, they theorize that the platelet growth factors wake up the dormant hair follicles, stimulating hair growth and lengthening the hair-growing cycle.

PRP also improves blood supply to the scalp and the hair follicles, boosting hair health, thickness, and strength.

What to expect

You will see improvements in your hair with PRP injections. However, results require multiple sessions, and you won’t see improvements immediately.

PRP for hair restoration starts with monthly injections for three months, then follow-up injections every three to six months. Most of our patients notice hair growth and thickness improvements around the three-month mark.

We also encourage lifestyle changes that benefit hair and skin health, such as protecting your scalp from the sun, eating a balanced diet, and drinking enough water. You can also visit our drip spa for intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy that supplies your body with nutrients that boost skin health.

PRP helps restore hair by reactivating dormant hair follicles. If you’re experiencing hair loss, now is the time to take action. The longer you wait, the harder it is to reestablish hair growth.
