I’m Still Young. Where Did My Hair Go?

I’m Still Young. Where Did My Hair Go?

Balding and hair loss are often associated with aging. But hair loss affects people at all ages. When your hair starts thinning in your 20s or 30s, you may revert to wearing hats or keeping your hair tied back so no one notices the bald spots.

If you’re young and you’re asking yourself, “Where did my hair go?” it’s time to take action. Early treatment for hair loss leads to better results.

At Montclair Rejuvenation Center in Verona and West Caldwell, New Jersey, our experienced team of aesthetic experts, led by Dr. Kelly Distefano, understands the effects hair thinning has on your physical and emotional well-being, especially when it starts at a young age. We use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to treat hair loss.

Here, we want to talk about hair loss, why it happens, and what you can do about it.

About hair loss

Most adults have between 100,000 to 150,000 strands of hair on their head. It’s normal to lose about 100 hairs a day. Because your hair grows in stages, the hairs you lose on a daily basis go unnoticed.

As you get older, hair growth slows down a bit. Almost all older adults experience hair thinning or balding.

However, you can start to go bald sooner than expected, especially if hair loss runs in your family.

Causes of hair loss

There are many conditions that cause hair loss. However, if you’re losing hair in your 20s and 30s, or even your teens, you may have androgenic alopecia.

Androgenic alopecia is a genetic condition that affects all sexes and is sometimes called male- or female-patterned baldness. With male-pattern baldness, hair loss may start in the teens or 20s, causing a receding hairline and balding on the crown (the top of your head).

Female-patterned baldness usually occurs around age 40 and causes all-over hair thinning.

Stress, nutritional deficiencies, and treatments for health conditions may also cause hair loss in younger adults.

What you can do

You may not like the loss of your hair at such an early age, but you don’t have to sit back and watch it happen. Taking care of your hair loss when it first starts may prevent further loss and improve the outcomes of your treatment. It’s easier to reactivate hair follicles that recently went dormant.

Treatment for hair loss depends on the cause. At Montclair Rejuvenation Center, we offer PRP hair restoration for hair loss. PRP is a blood product made from a sample of your own blood that has a higher concentration of platelets.

Platelets are the tiny cells in your blood that form blood clots to stop cuts from bleeding. These tiny cells also contain specialized proteins that help with the repair of the injured area.

For hair loss, the platelets in the PRP reactivate the dormant hair follicles in the scalp and increase the growing cycle, improving hair thickness, growth, and health. We inject the PRP directly into the areas of the scalp where the hair is thinning.

We recommend a series of three PRP hair restoration treatments every four weeks and then follow-up treatments every 3-6 months. Most of our patients notice improvements in their hair within 2-3 months.

You may feel devastated when you start losing your hair when you’re young, but there are many effective treatments that can stop the loss.
